When Chris Evans was offered the role of the latest Marvel character big screen adaptation he was somewhat hesitant, for reasons of both type casting and a commitment to six sequels the actor declined the part three times. Speaking to EW, Evans recalled his feelings:
At the time, I remember telling a buddy of mine, ‘If the movie bombs, I’m f—-ed. If the movie hits, I’m f—-ed!…I realized my whole decision making process was fear based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear…I can’t believe I was almost too chicken to play Captain America.
He met with Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston, which helped him get past his uncertainty as he was impressed with their plans for the new movie. As for the tone which is set in the World War II era, Evans was curious of the approach this genre type movie would have, whether it would borrow from the tone of Sam Raimi’s Spider-man or the brooding undercurrent of The Dark Knight. Though as most of the characters are looking to be tied in with Josh Whedon’s The Avengers which will feature Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, the director confirmed that it would likely aim for the tone which Iron Man established and which help redefine Marvel’s characters. Evans spoke of the plans for the film:
… it’s not going to be – as dark as something like ‘Batman…I think the world of ‘Iron Man’ was done really well. It stayed grounded in reality but still stayed true to the fact that it’s a comic book movie, so it does have to have some life to it.
