Fast and the Furious 6 and 7 To Shoot Simultaneously

Fast Five was a mega-hit both internationally and in the U.S and this has prompted Universal Pictures to consider shooting the next two installments back-to-back. In terms of cost cutting and reducing the time between releases, combining the planned sequels into one big production could prove financially viable and in the long term very lucrative. The recent ‘Harry Potter’ films and the ‘Twilight’ finale were both shot this way, and in the past this approach was used somewhat to the detriment of ‘The Matrix’ sequels, and to greater effect for parts 2 and 3 of ‘Back to the Future’.

Justin Lin has directed the last three films of the series and is set to return, though earlier this year he was tentatively attached to helm the next Terminator revival flick. Plans have since changed – as they do – and this shift in tactic confirms that Lin will likely be busy with the Street Racing franchise for the next 3 years.

Fast and the Furious 6 and 7 may similarly be parts 1 and 2 of a bigger story, however screenwriter Chris Morgan is said to be only developing ideas for a single flick, so some extra soul searching might be in order to milk another story. This approach has it’s drawbacks, narrative fatigue may become a factor as would cast and crew exhaustion. However films like Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit prequels have learned the lessons of shooting ‘The Lord of The Rings’ trilogy simultaneously, and this time around have scheduled hiatuses between blocks of shooting  – allowing the director to edit segments and if need be shoot additional scenes.

The story of part six is set to take place somewhere in Europe and Jason Statham is reportedly being eyed to co-star. Justin Lin has already mapped out a 12 minute action scene which he completed during Fast Five, and the intention to bring back stars Michelle Rodriguez and Eva Mendes‘ characters indicates where the story might be headed.

The 6th film has been given a release date of May 24, 2013, and if the decision is made to shoot 2 films back-to-back, there might be some rescheduling – however if all goes well, part 7 could arrive the following year.
