Bond May Battle Bad-Ass Blofeld
With filming finally underway on the new Bond film Skyfall after the studio’s much publicized financial woes, there’s growing speculation that one of the franchise’s most enduring villains maybe making a return to bring back some old-school intrigue to the 23rd Bond flick. Ernst Stavro Blofeld is a classic Bond bad-ass, appearing in seven of the films, and played by six different actors – most notably by screen legend Donald Pleasence.
The character has undergone various changes throughout the series and at one stage biting the dust – his appearance is decidedly different from Ian Flemming‘s creation, however his likeness has forever been associated with Pleasence’s initial portrayal. Now with filming underway and the main cast announced, speculation by the fan and film community seem convinced that his character will be revived in the new film ‘Skyfall’, with accalimed actor Ralph Fiennes taking over the role.
The actor is said to be clean-shaven in possible preparation for the part, and when The Playlist asked whether he’d be playing the famous Bond villain, Fiennes played coy saying “I can’t say anything more.” He had previously stated however that the reason he was doing the new Bond flick was because screenwriter John Logan who penned his directorial venture ‘Coriolanus’, had written a very appealing part the actor couldn’t pass up:
because he wrote this really interesting part which is really quite fun.
When he was asked directly if he would be playing Blofeld he laughed once more saying:
I can’t say anything, [but] I will not be stroking a white pussy!
As for hints given by the screenwriter, John Logan was at the recent BAFTA Screenwriters lecture and when asked about the prospect of seeing Blofeld return, Logan was reminded by an audience member that he had once said that “Bond should always fight Blofeld”. Somewhat pressed by the question he apparently gave a wry smile and replied:
Bond should always fight Blofeld.
We can only wait until set pics surface or other clues are given to confirm if these rumors are founded, though if true his character may likely be revealed towards the latter part of the story – with Javier Bardem being Blofeld’s messenger.
Only time will tell – let us know what you think.
