THE HUNGER GAMES New Trailer

A new theatrical trailer has been released for Lionsgate’s highly anticipated flick The Hunger Games, which stars the talented Jennifer Lawrence in the adaptation of the popular sci-fi trilogy by Suzanne Collins – where youngsters must fight to the death in live telecasts for the enjoyment of a twisted future culture.

Offering a new spin on the premise of the ‘The Running Man‘, the story takes place after the destruction of North America and a new and wealthy nation known as Panem has since emerged. 12 poorer districts surround the Capitol and as a form of punishment for their previous rebellions, once a year a teenage boy and girl are selected from each of the districts to fight to the death as ‘tributes’ in a nationally televised event.

Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers for the Games when her her younger sister is selected to compete, and to make things worse her former school friend Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) is also chosen. However the ‘Tributes’ from the other districts have trained all their lives to compete in these ‘Games’, and this will no doubt create fierce copmpetion in the dangerous, outdoor arenas.

The trailer looks pretty intriguing, and though far fetched – it’s a high concept piece with themes that fuse today’s obsessions with sports and reality shows in an age of high-tech warfare.  It’s directed by Gary Ross whose most notable flick is ‘Pleasantville’, and interestingly his friend – filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, contributed some second unit directing during production.

Producers are hoping this $80 million flick about a dystopian future connects with audiences and marks the beginning of a four-film series.  The studio has faith and in August announced the second movie ‘Catching Fire’, would be released on November 22, 2013 – the third novel is to be broken into two films. While the trailer lacks any violent confrontations from the actual Hunger Games, and there’s barely a hint of the technology used in the telecasts – what we are offered is a glimpse of what’s poised to become a screen phenomenon.

The film also stars Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz, and Donald Sutherland.

The Hunger Games opens March 23, 2012.
