STAR TREK Sequel Arrives 2013 in 3D

The sequel to J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot is finally moving ahead with shooting set to commence in the new year and an earlier than expected release date now set by Paramount. With pre-production moving along at warp speed, fans can also look forward to seeing the crew of the enterprise in a whole new dimension.

While production was expected to get underway by mid 2011, Abrams’ commitment to his pet sci-fi project ‘Super 8’ caused inevitable delays and writers Roberto OrciAlex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof were also busy on other projects.  J.J. Abrams officially committed to directing the sequel in September which was largely dependent on the script which Roberto Orci has said is now complete and his fellow scripters are currently re-writing the 3rd draft – so as to bring the film in on budget. The original Trek reboot cost $150 million so it’s safe to assume that the sequel is being honed to cost a similar amount.

Filming on the sequel will officially begin on January 15, 2012, and the most of the production design has been completed with many of the sets from the 2009 film to be reused.  The film of this visual scale is sure to contain plenty of effects shots and to make sure they are of the highest quality, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) has already began work on certain FX sequences. Most of the sequel will be shot on Paramount’s sound stages, however Abrams is said to be scouting a location to stand in for a ‘jungle planet’ and there’s also a rumor that a ‘famous star trek location’ will be brought to life by a museum in Los Angeles.

All of the main cast members will be reprising their roles – though at this stage there’s no word on which of the classic star trek antagonists will be facing off against Kirk and his crew. However Abrams recently confirmed to MTV News that Benicio Del Toro is in talks to play the villain having met with the director to discuss his involvement – though for secrecy’s sake he remains in the dark as to his role. Coming Soon has also confirmed that composer Michael Giacchino will once again be providing his rousing musical accompaniment for the flick.

Perhaps the biggest news is the revelation that Abrams will be shooting the next installment in 3D, having previously stated that the format doesn’t necessarily govern his choice, clearly the impressive results achieved by his peers and the industry trend has swayed his decision to make the next Trek adventure in the cutting edge format.

The yet untitled Star Trek Sequel will re-unite stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban and John Cho and is scheduled to open May 17th, 2013.
