The first trailer is here for the Farrelly Brothers resurrection of the classic comedy act of The Three Stooges. The new film sees Will Sasso, Sean Hayes, and Chris Diamantopoulos taking over the roles originated by Moe Howard, Curly Howard and Larry Fine. The comedy trio rose to fame in the mid 1930’s and changed the face of physical and slapstick comedy – a style that’s been both revered and emulated, with a loyal fan-base spanning generations.
The Farrelly Brothers are filmmakers who have established their own style of humour, ranging from the gross-out to the extreme. If anyone knows how to best fuse this classic style of comedy with the present – they are the perfect choice.
The trailer confirms that the characters are largely drawn from their original counterparts, Will Sasso who started out on ‘Mad TV’ with memorable impersonations of Steven Seagal and Arnie, mimicks the comedic styles of the original Curly almost to perfection. However while Sasso resembles his character, actors Chris Diamantopoulos and Sean Hayes have been transformed via make-up to resemble theirs. As for the tone of the film, it’s been devised to mirror the structure of the Stooges shorts by having the story divided into three segments.
Judge for yourself, fans will either be impressed or outraged – but it’s rare for performances to be recreated, while still paying tribute to the contributions made by this timeless comedy trio.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Left on a nun’s doorstep, Larry, Curly and Moe grow up finger-poking, nyuk-nyuking and woo-woo-wooing their way to uncharted levels of knuckleheaded misadventure. Out to save their childhood home, only The Three Stooges could become embroiled in an oddball murder plot…while also stumbling into starring in a phenomenally successful TV reality show.
The film also stars Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Hudson, and Larry David.
The Three Stooges opens April 4, 2012.
