HBO has released a teaser trailer for the second season of Game of Thrones. The medieval fantasy drama based on the books by George R. R. Martin has been wildly successful attracting a growing legion of fans. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss the show is at times both confronting and challenging, but it’s style of storytelling and well crafted characters make it impossible not to be drawn to this dark and decidedly unearthly world.
Offering a glimpse at what we can expect next season, the trailer is narrated by the yet to be introduced Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) the brother of deceased King Robert (Mark Addy) and rightful heir to the Iron Throne before the diabolical Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) came of age. Though as viewers watched in the shocking final act of last season, Joffrey and his mother Cersei seized power and began their reign – inciting what will be a long and bloody tale of revenge.
Those who have read the novels know some of the surprises that lay in store, however creators Benioff and Weiss have spoken about the expansion of the world and the introduction of new characters – so expect some new twists and turns along the way. The tagline for the trailer is the “Cold Winds Are Rising” and is based on volume 2 of the books, A Clash of Kings. The show is expected to garner impressive ratings and rumor has it that HBO is considering shooting seasons three and four back-to-back as it would take more than one season to adapt the next book in the series, A Storm of Swords.
Season 2 of Game of Thrones premieres April 2012.
