Kristen Wiig Bursts Universal’s BRIDESMAIDS Sequel Bubble

Bridesmaids was a favorite with audiences and a mega hit at the box office earning close to $290 million worldwide and garnering two golden globe nominations, including best comedy flick and best actress Kristen Wiig.  Now Universal is keen on making a sequel but it seems it might be without the talented Wiig who also helped pen the script.

It seems that despite the film’s mega-haul,  Wiig and her co-stars only received a $100,000 bonus for their efforts – which is thought to be a contributing factor. Studio chief Ron Meyer is said to have offered Wiig an 8 figure deal to reconsider but at this stage it clearly isn’t enough or the actress just isn’t interested in rehashing material.

Wiig had this to day when she spoke with The Hollywod Reporter:

We aren’t working on that.  Annie [Mumolo] and I aren’t planning a sequel. We are writing something else.

The studio is keen to have another R-rated comedy franchise in a similar vein to The Hangover.  Producer Judd Apatow seems unwilling to get on board without Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolos full participation.

Apatow made this  statement:

The key is we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better than the first one.  We don’t want to do it unless it can be great. I don’t think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this year.

If the studio can’t get their way they are said to be looking at a new story that would see Bridesmaids‘ breakout star Melissa McCarthy and other supporting cast members carry the flick.

The success of the original was in large part due to Wiig’s talent both on screen and behind the scenes, and while the studio maybe keen on a sequel – rushing it into production would be detrimental. While the Hangover part 2 was immensely successful, it merely rehashed the original’s plot points and this is clearly something Wiig is not interested in doing.

Wiig is currently busy working on independent movies,  starring next in Imogene, the comedy Revenge for Jolly!, and Sean Penn’s character-driven drama The Comedian which co-stars Robert De Niro.
