Dwayne Johnson has become the go-to guy for franchises that need some extra muscle; the newly rebooted G.I. Joe flick a prime example. Since appearing in the widly successful Fast Five, his on screen presence helped steer the story in a new direction – shifting the street racing premise towards a heist / chase theme dynamic.
After the films’ strong box-office take, Universal Studios were quick to announce a sequel was in the works – then soon afterwards claimed that two more installments would be made back-to-back, for budgetary and scheduling benefits.
Now it seems this may no longer be the case, as Johnson revealed to MTV. He said that they’re set to begin filming Fast Six in May, but not looking to make two flicks at once:
I don’t think we’re going to shoot them back-to-back. We were going to try that because it wouldn’t make sense to have the same crew and have everybody there in one place, but I think we’re dealing with some weather issues, so from what I know we’re going to shoot Fast 6 first and then worry about Fast 7 a little later.
While it’s interesting to hear that they’re no longer shooting the sequels back to back, director Justin Lin made a taught piece of entertainment last time round. While filming concurrently sounds good logistically, it can lead to a watered down story with a sometimes unnecessarily divided narrative that can be frustrating for moviegoers. While this will no doubt delay the release of a seventh installment, it is nonetheless a serendipitous turn of events for the Fast and Furious franchise.
