Joel Kinnaman who currently co-stars in the AMC series The Killing, has landed the role of RoboCop in director José Padilha‘s long gestating upcoming reboot.
News broke last week that the actor had been offered the part, now Deadline confirms that a deal has now been closed. At one point, Kinnaman was set to play Lancelot in Warner Bros’s Arthur & Lancelot alongside Game of Thrones star Kit Harington – though there were issues with the budget and the studio put the project on ice.
This all bodes well for Kinnaman – the 1987 flick propelled Peter Weller into sci-fi’s hall of fame, and Paul Verhoeven‘s violent and satirical original remains a popular topic of discussion.
Last year rumors ran rampant that director Padilha was eyeing Michael Fassbender for the Robocop lead, something which Fassbender entertained – though his schedule is extremely busy these days with The Counselor, Twelve Days a Slave, and a sequel to X-Men: First Class in-the-works.
Gran Torino writer Nick Schenk is penning the script and with the lead now cast, production will likely get underway soon. A movie like Robocop will no doubt require a long shooting schedule and allow time for any necessary re-shoots.
