The first trailer for the horror film The Possession has gone online. Previously titled Dibbuk Box, the new title dispenses with cryptic clues and cuts straight to the point, which makes sense for marketing reasons. Originally the film was meant to debut in October 2011, so it’s been sitting on the shelf for a while.
According to Yiddish folklore, a “Dybbuk” is a wandering spirit who takes over the bodies of living people, rather than moving onto the next realm of existence. The film stars The Closer‘s Kyra Sedgwick, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan who’s currently in the mesmerizing 50’s noir style series, Magic City.
The story doesn’t seem to offer anything new to the genre, but Sam Raimi serves as a producer, and he’s a filmmaker who knows how to scare the pants off audiences having made the 80’s Zombie gore fest, The Evil Dead ( the remake is currently in production) and his more recent horror flick, Drag Me To Hell. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (Boogeyman) are responsible for the script.
The Possession centers on the youngster Hannah, (Natasha Calis) who acquires an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that it contains an evil spirit within. Her parents must then find a way to exorcise the sinister entity from their daughter, before it’s too late.
The poster is very eye catching – the tone of the flick seems to be paying homage to the likes of classic horror films such as The Exorcist and Poltergeist rather than slasher flicks, or the popular ‘ found footage’ genre horrors that currently dominate the market.

The film is directed by Ole Bornedal and opens August 31st, 2012.
