MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Remake to Star Tom Cruise

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was an amazing return to form for Tom Cruise and perhaps the best in the series since Brian DePalma‘s 1996 original. While there’s no word yet on the next installment, the actor has signed on to remake a classic MGM movie.

Variety reports that MGM is developing a remake of John Sturges’ 1960 Western The Magnificent Seven with Cruise attached to star. Apparently the actor has been keen on remaking the pic for some time. In the original,  the main character of Chris Adams was played by screen legend Yul Brynner, and was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai.

The remake is still in it’s early stages of development, and no word yet on supporting players, who’s penning the script or when or where the film will be shot. Nonetheless a new version of The Magnificent Seven is an exciting prospect, the original went on to become a cinema classic, the films original sore by Elmer Bernstein become an iconic western theme.

Cruise has plenty of other films currently in the works, he plays a rock star in the upcoming musical Rock of Ages, he recently completed the Jack Reacher adaptation One Shot, and he’s currently filming Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s new sci-fi epic, Oblivion.  He’ll follow that up with Doug Liman’s sci-fi actioner All You Need Is Kill,  he’s attached to star in a reboot of Van Helsing and Clint Eastwood wants him for a redo of A Star Is Born.

Additionally he may once again say:  ‘I feel the need, the need for speed‘ in a sequel to Top Gun that will see director Tony Scott return to bring his unique style to the realm of navy fighter pilots, and Jerry Bruckheimer who lives for sequels will most likely produce.
