When the first trailer was released for G.I. Joe 2, it looked like Channing Tatum‘s character of Duke wasn’t going to feature as much – the trailer hinting that the character befell some kind of tragedy. It’s now been revealed that for some strange reason – possibly due to the fact that most of the original cast was excised – Tatum’s character gets killed off in the first ten minutes.
Test audiences were not happy with this as well as little or no inter- action between his and Dwayne Johnson‘s character prior to those events. So producers went back and shot some extra scenes to include prior to this narrative blunder. While the former Rock seems to be taking over every major franchise, it turns out that he couldn’t quite out shine Channing Tatum’s star and further test screenings revealed that audiences were still displeased with the actor’s untimely exit. Let’s face it, shock deaths are what supporting characters are for, you don’t expect the big names to get bumped off.
Deadline did some digging and found out the movie moguls realised they made a giant miscalculation by killing off Tatum, and the news that the movie was being delayed for nine months to accommodate a 3D conversion was all part of the ruse… “The 3D is an excuse as to not reveal the Tatum of it all” a source revealed.
Despite a ton of money being spent on marketing and toys ready to hit the shelves, the film will now be re-worked. Test screenings scores ranged from “mediocre to bad”, and the only positive aspect was the short relationship between Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson. The delay will allow for the stars schedules to align as well as the necessary script revisions to bring Tatum’s character back.
Perhaps the only benefit is the re-shoots can be shot using the 3D format as originally planned.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation is now scheduled for release March 29th, 2013.
