Quentin Tarantino‘s foray into the spaghetti western sub genre is here with the first trailer for Django Unchained. Feeling like a throwback to the films of Sergio Leone (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), Tarantino‘s western employs appropriately reminiscent visuals, fused with a unique narrative and his unflinching ability to follow the story – wherever it may go. Set in the old American south, this film touches upon the darkest moments of the country’s history, and will no doubt be controversial with it’s violent revisionist tone.
Tarantino has compiled a top notch cast to bring to life his inventive characters that play against their western stereotypes. Jamie Foxx stars as the escaped slave and titular Django, with Leonardo DiCaprio playing Calvin Candie, the sadistic plantation owner. Django teams up with bounty hunter and mentor Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) with the hopes of rescuing his wife (Kerry Washington) from DiCaprio’s evil clutches.
A new Tarantino film is always a celebrated event, and the trailer shows off his musical repertoire, and unmistakable dialogue which makes this looks like a worthy follow up to his wartime Nazi masterpiece, Inglourious Basterds. Fans of the filmmaker are promised a dark, but enticingly fun glimpse of what the western era may have been like – through the unique style of a Tarantino lens.
The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, M.C. Gainey, Walton Goggins, Garrett Dillahunt, Dennis Christopher, Gerald McRaney, Laura Cayouette, Don Johnson, and Tom Savini.
Django Unchained opens December 25th 2012.
