Clooney takes a Machete to the Box Office

George Clooney’s new film The American landed at the top of the box office modestly beating out the somewhat anticipated Rodriguez helmed exploitation flick Machete. The American finished the weekend round-up with approx. $16 million after knocking last weeks number one movie Takers from the top spot, arriving in almost 2800 cinemas. It beat out the Danny Trejo action flick that has some big names attached including Robert DeNiro with hotties Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez and Lindsay Lohan.

Whilst Clooney’s sleepy assassin flick is an engaging and  intelligent examination of the life of a hired gun who lowers his emotional guard long enough to become compromised, the blood and guts extravaganza of Machete started out as a faux trailer and somewhat of a joke reel when Rodriguez teamed up with Tarantino for their Grindhouse double flick.

The original trailer directed by Quentin Tarantino and Ethan Maniquiscan can be seen here which is a hilarious send up of a 70’s poorly edited, over the top corny voice over with a predictable plot that’s all too serious. This was the intended tone to serve as a gag for the  offbeat double feature that followed, similar to Ben Stiller’s intros for Tropic Thunder. Check out the original from the DeathProof / Planet Terror coming attractions, and head over to the trailers page for the actual Machete 2010 trailer as well as The American.

Machete managed to chop it’s way to third place at the box-office with a respectable $11.5 million which isn’t so bad for this type of nonsense. Notably the film also stars bad-ass Steven Seagal in a role that’s likely to have just  the right amount of bloodshed and Don Johnson as an overzealous border patrolman, it’s all violence, and all in fun.. worth checking out.
