While Arnie’s hopes of seeing a new Terminator film come to fruition seem less likely with previously attached Fast Five director Justin Lin forced to leave the project [ perhaps temporarily ] – the former governer is keeping true to his word and making a big film comeback. With his turn in The Expendables 2 proving his charisma is never in short supply, the first trailer for his new flick The Last Stand goes all out in favour of old-school action.
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the sheriff of a sleepy border town caught in the middle of an escape from a FBI prison convoy by a drug kingpin with the help of his violent henchman. This serves up plenty of big car crashes and explosions – with some cool shoot-outs and stylish imagery.
Perhaps Arnie seems a little out of place as a sheriff of a mid western town as his big persona requires a proportionally bigger canvas – but playing against type could just be what’s needed to see the former 90’s action icon in a new light – the trailer shows he’s quick to send up his former tough guy status too. Director Kim Jee-Woon‘s offers some stylish visuals, fused with some fun moments of comic relief and blistering action – so this could be a cool flick worth catching.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.
The film also stars Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Rodrigo Santoro, Johnny Knoxville, Jaimie Alexander, Peter Stormare, Zach Gilford, andGenesis Rodriguez.
