After last season’s controversial ending which saw one of the shows major characters bite the dust – there’s plenty of expectation to see how Boardwalk Empire continues after losing actor Michael Pitt. Nonetheless the show is an engrossing depiction of Atlantic City in the early 1920s, and the rise of the mob through illegal liquor distribution from which corrupt city officials profit. The duplicitous Nucky Thompson ( Steve Buscemi ) will be dealing with the fallout in the wake of Jimmy Darmody’s tragic demise, and the escalating violence that’s inevitable.
In April this year, The Academy of Television and Science hosted an exclusive panel with creator Terrance Winter and the cast and of HBO’s hit show.
During the panel, Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt discussed the shock ending:
Michael Pitt – “I suspected it, maybe provoked it,” and that on the first day of shooting the Second Season, he called creator Winter and asked, “Why he was going to kill me?” Winter reassured Pitt “Relax – I’m not going to kill you.”
Steve Buscemi admitted he had an emotional time shooting the last scene and had to call Winter and go over it beat by beat to understand why Nucky would do this, “I didn’t want to do it”.
Terrence Winter justified the finale, explaining that the season had to end with Nucky “crossing that line as a gangster, ”and that it was always planned. “It’s always a challenge to stay ahead of audiences.” He added that it wasn’t done for shock value, but to stay true to the show. He added, “No one is safe on the show.” even historical figures, joking “how great would it be to kill Al Capone in 1924…”
As for the new season, the creator had this to say: “It’s New Year’s Eve 1922, going into 1923. The world has changed quite a bit. Things have gotten quite a bit more violent as Prohibition has gone on and people are running out of liquor. Hence Nucky’s world is going to change.”
