A fourth instalment of Beverly Hills Cop was a possibility at one stage, with director Brett Ratner talking up it’s chances having made Tower Heist with star Eddie Murphy. However in October 2011, Murphy speaking with Rolling Stone said that the studio was no longer interested, he did say that he was developing the show as a series.
Murphy’s reps at WME helped shape the project and suggested a range of comedy writers. However Murphy wanted a cop-themed show with an edge, and when Shawn Ryan, creator of “The Shield” was approached, he apparently jumped at the project.
Last month Murphy and Ryan were pitching the show to the major networks – now CBS has agreed to a “put-pilot” order for the series which means it’s guaranteed to air on CBS, or a penalty will have to be paid to the show’s producers.
Eddie Murphy will serve as an executive producer and appear in the pilot. As far as the concept goes, Murphy has said that he sees his wise cracking Axel Foley character as the chief of police in Detroit, and the show would focus on the exploits of Axel Foley’s son, Aaron Foley. No word on whether Judge Reinhold will appear.
Look for Beverly Hills Cop – the series, to premiere sometime in 2013.
