With Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers proving that you can successfully combine multiple comic book heroes into one flick and still hold the audiences attention, not to mention pull in a over a billion dollars at the global box-office, Warner Bros. is hoping to replicate the success with their long gestating Justice League flick. Director Christopher Nolan, who redefined the comic book character of Batman, was asked by Warners to shepherd the new incarnation of Superman to the big screen after Bryan Singers’ 2006 attempt failed to relaunch the franchise. With David Goyer penning the script, and 300 director Zack Snyder at the helm, the first studio screenings of the completed flick have apparently gone over well – and now, not only is the studio looking ahead to further sequels, but they also want Christopher Nolan to oversee their next big comic book iteration, according to Latino Review who broke the story.
Warner Bros. planned Justice League flick has been tentatively scheduled for a 2015 release, and features the characters of Batman and Superman along with other super hero characters in the DC Universe. There is also a rumoured team up flick known as the World’s Finest which pits Supes and Bats together – but in order for these planned movies to succeed similar to The Avengers – these characters will need to have continuity, and this will require Christian Bale to be on board to reprise his role as Batman along with Man of Seel star Henry Cavill.
According to Latino-Review:
They’re shaping this as a vehicle for Christian Bale to reprise his role as Batman and join Henry Cavill‘s Superman in the Justice League movie.
Warner Bros. recently rejected the script for Justice League turned in by Gangster Squad scribe Will Beall, which reportedly saw Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern battle the villain Darkseid along with a ‘heavy cosmic threat’. Warner’s has reason to be concerned, the reinvention of their comic book characters made by the Nolan camp has resonated with audiences, and with the positive reception of the Man of Steel by the studio, they are now realising that this approach to comic book characters is a game changer that would not only make for a major tentpole release, but would also be in contrast to the direction which Marvel are taking their current properties.
In their video report, LR ’s El Mayimbe reveals that:
Christopher Nolan has completely taken over the DCU at Warner Bros. Anything having to do with these super heroes, goes through him now.
Nolan is currently planning his next movie Interstellar, but it’s possible that he could be overseeing the direction of the upcoming DCU movies as LR claims, especially considering he has been the architect of their most successful outings. While Nolan has stated that The Dark Knight Rises was the final instalment, Christian Bale told Empire magazine last year that he would consider reprising the role if Nolan came to him with a great story. In terms of the tone of the Justice League movie, it does seem hard to imagine Bale’s Batman alongside more colourful superheroes, especially considering the story closure of The Dark Knight Rises.
Faced with the prospect of finding a new Batman, and possibly damaging the memory of Nolan’s work, crafting a vehicle that would allow Bale to reprise his role could be a priority for Warners Bros. With The Avengers laying the groundwork for team-up movies, and Nolan overseeing the Superman reboot and possible sequel, we may be on the forefront of a new wave of comic book movies.
