The star of TV’s Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Andy Whitfield has been forced to put the show on hold indefinitely due to a recurrence of cancer. He was diagnosed with treatable Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in early March and this forced the second season of the show to be moved back and in turn a 6 episode prequel story Spartacus: Gods of the Arena that featured Lucy Lawless and John Hannah was shot to make time for his recovery. After being given an initial clean bill of health, Whitfield was in training for season 2 of the show until doctors told him of the recurrence of the cancer and that he would have to begin aggressive treatment. Whitfield made the announcement:
It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey
Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said:
Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time…Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us.
As for the production which is obviously in limbo, it is unknown how the show will proceed and in what direction the producers will take. Since they were so accommodating initially perhaps production will be delayed until his return and with such an iconic character and well received show, that the time lost may be recouped some years down the road. The producers could continue with a spin-off show to bridge the production gap but no news regarding this possibility has been given and it is unlikely that recasting would be worthwhile. Unless Andy Whitfield makes a full recovery, the show may be on hiatus indefinitely, fans can only wait.
Until then our best wishes go out to the star, he is such a courageous man we can only hope that his incredible strength carries him through this period of his life.
