The 1982 film TRON was a milestone in movies primarily for it’s integration of computer generated imagery and the cutting edge visuals that contributed to the digital film-making revolution. Despite only making a modest amount at the box office, the movie eventually became a cult classic for it’s innovative grasp of future gaming culture as well as a catalyst for the development of computer technology. To accomplish the effects the resources of four different companies were combined to generate the ground breaking images, and each of the systems were unique hybrids requiring a significant amount of co-ordination by computer effects supervisor Richard Taylor. The images we see in the film such as the light-cycles shooting into the distance on a 3d plane look somewhat rudimentary by today’s standards, but created a new vision of perception that became a precursor to what would eventuate.

The world of Tron has now come full circle with Disney bringing a new installment to the screens with TRON Legacy. It’s interesting to note that the initial teaser released more than a year ago was made prior to actual filming but confirmed Disney was revving up production, and showcased the unique style of director and computer whiz Joseph Kosinski. The latest trailer gives us a glimpse of what to expect as well as the sheer technological leap that has been made since the original. More-so this film is being presented in digital 3D which is likely to be an incredible viewer experience as well as bringing the intentions of Tron’s computer imagery to the forefront.
The exciting trailer shows how Flynn’s son played by Garret Hedlund enters the computer realm to find his father and encounters Clu 2.0, the digital counterpart played by Jeff Bridges who appears as a younger CG version as well as his current appearance. Also returning is original co-star Bruce Boxleitner as Alan Bradley and new to the Tron realm is acclaimed British actor Michael Sheen as Castor. Rounding off the cast is the stunning beauty and talented Olivia Wilde who makes the new suits look very fashionable and appears to be a romantic interest of sorts to Sam Flynn. The hottie who recently appeared in TV’s House shows that she has an interesting career ahead and will likely be something of a pin-up for a new generation of computer geeks, and all other red blooded guys.

Though if it takes more than great CG effects to put you in the cinema, the story should be well designed with Lost writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz on-board, who also executive produced the TV juggernaut’s final heart wrenching season. Rumor has it that Disney is impressed with what they’re seeing and have given the go ahead for the writers to start penning a sequel, so whilst there maybe an unresolved story it will likely propel the Tron universe well into the future.
The visuals of this new Tron show just how the world of cinema has been for ever revolutionized by digital technology and for those unfamiliar with the original they will surely enjoy what will be an adrenalin charged movie ride that will also be a defining statement of today’s virtual realm.
