AMC has renewed their breakout hit Zombie drama The Walking Dead for a second season after episode 2 aired last night to stellar ratings which hit the target age demographic of 18-49, with another 5 million viewers tuning in. The announcement also includes Fox International Channels with the new series performing incredibly well in 120 countries with record breaking premieres in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East.

Based on Robert Kirkman‘s graphic novel series, The Walking Dead stars British actor Andrew Lincoln as a law enforcement officer who awakens after a highway shooting to find his town and others nearby overrun by a Zombie infestation. What made the show such a standout was the epic production values and the intense story telling style which was a testament to the visionary director Frank Darabont’s incredible stylistic film-making which took prime time TV and knocked it out of the ball park.

Charlie Collier, President of AMC said in statement:

No other cable series has ever attracted as many Adults 18-49 as ‘The Walking Dead.’  This reaffirms viewers’ hunger for premium television on basic cable.  We are so proud to be bringing back ‘The Dead’ again, across the globe.

The first season is only six episodes but with the shows renewal and high ratings, season 2 has been given a 13 episode order.

Shot on location in Atlanta, The Walking Dead also features Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh, Sarah Wayne Callies as Lori Grimes, Laurie Holden as Andrea, Jeffrey DeMunn as Dale, Steven Yeun as Glen, Emma Bell as Amy and Chandler Riggs as Carl Grimes.

The Walking Dead continues Sundays on AMC.
