Rumours of The Joker’s Return Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

The-Joker-clapping

News that’s been floating around on the web-boards in recent days is The Dark Knight Rises would see Heath Ledger return in a brief cameo. Whilst some were thrown by the idea, others were quite interested to see the actor who made such an impact in the second film appear albeit via unused footage. When the actor sadly passed  away, many  people including the studios thought the role might be recast, with the idea for the third film having The Joker behind bars whilst offering clues to Batman‘s latest dilemma.

The report from a supposed movie insider was:

The idea is to use these fragments of cut scenes and use CGI to have The Joker appear one last time… Chris wants some continuity between movies and for the franchise to pay tribute to Heath and his portrayal of the Joker.

After the wildfire began a contact at Warner Bros reached out to douse the rumors with this statement:

It’s just not real.

Well there you have it! Whilst it would’ve been cool to see some unseen footage intentionally held back by Nolan for the purpose of creating a transition to the next villain, Christopher Nolan isn’t the sort of filmmaker to cash-in on someone’s demise like that.

He’s said in the past that he’s not concerned with internet rumor or for that matter iphones, so whatever cyberspace thinks the illustrious filmmaker has his own plans so we’ll know more when the first images start to come online mid next year.

Recently he gave an interview with EW and was asked that after the success of Inception, would he prefer to be working on another movie instead of Batman:

nolan batmanNo, it’s exactly the opposite. I feel very glad that I’m doing another Batman film. I think it would have been daunting to sit down and write an original script after Inception.

I love working within the realm and rules of our Batman world. It’s kind of nice to have someplace to go that I’m super-excited about.

He added that the success of the mind bending Inception has allowed him to tackle another installment without the need to try and prove his worth:

I must say that I’m glad — I’m very, very glad — to be embarking on the last chapter of our Batman saga without any sense of obligation or duty to the studio. They did very well with Inception. So I’m able to go into finishing our story in a very enthusiastic way.

Though he’s noted as saying the ‘last chapter‘ in his words quite often, there is always the possibility of another Batman some time down the road, but for now we’ll just have to wait for this movie to come out before we begin hoping for any more.

The Dark Knight Rises hits cinemas and IMAX on July 20, 2012.
