News about the upcoming Superman reboot has come to light with word that the script by David Goyer and Christopher Nolan has been handed over to director Zack Snyder to be developed in his usual style.
At a recent Warner Bros party in Hollywood to kick-off the upcoming release of Inception on Blu-ray, Gregory Ellwood of Hitfix spoke with Nolan‘s producing partner and wife Emma Thomas who explained that the new Superman flick would very much be Snyder’s movie.
She said that the next installment of Batman would be occupying both her and Christopher Nolan‘s time and explained that the new Superman story had been developed ‘to an appropriate screenplay’ and was now in Snyder‘s reliable hands.
With casting calls going out for the new Man Of Steel and other key players, a character breakdown has been circulating to assist in the search for actors. It has a similar tone to the Superman Birthright comics where Clark Kent is introduced as a young journalist traveling the globe trying to help people.
When he is compelled to use his secret powers to intervene in a crisis in West Africa, Clark returns to Smallville to learn more about his origins and the hero he was born to be.
The Birthright edition is a popular retelling that later became part of story canon with the familiar characters set against a modern backdrop.
Speaking about the concept for the new story, Emma Thomas added that Nolan and David Goyer came up with the idea ‘they couldn’t believe wasn’t being explored by Warner Bros.’ Drawing inspiration from the tone of these comics offers a new way into the Superman mythos that would lend itself to the visual style and narrative flair that Zack Snyder brings to his movies.
Another interesting piece of news is the score of the movie is getting a new theme instead of the redo disaster heard in Bryan Singer‘s fanboy flick. Whilst the John Williams score was rousing in it’s time, a rebirth of the Superman Legend requires a new anthem.
Hans Zimmer, composer of the incredibly rousing The Dark Knight soundtrack has been tapped to score the new movie. When Scott Huver of PopcornBiz caught up with the composer in October, he gave this insight into his plans for the reboot of the popular franchise.
You are allowed to reinvent, but you have to try to be as good or at least as iconic and it has to resonate and it has to become a part of the zeitgeist. That’s the job. On ‘Gladiator’ I remember people always talking about ‘Spartacus’ and I kept telling them, ‘When you saw “Spartacus” and how it affected it you, that’s how I want a modern audience to be affected by what we do now.’ So I think ultimately you’re supposed to reinvent.
Superman – The Man Of Steel is set to begin filming in June 2011.
Update: Hans Zimmer stated his comments were taken out of context and despite rumors he’s not yet attatched to the project.
