TNT has announced that its long-running crime drama The Closer will be coming to an end next year. Reports say that it was Kyra Sedgwick‘s decision to walk away from the show which begins filming its seventh season in the spring. Currently airing its sixth season which concludes January 3rd 2011, The Closer has been a hit for the network averaging more 8 million viewers. Reports also indicate that The Closer ranks as one of the most watched cable’s shows of all time, though it attracts largely older viewers which isn’t great for advertisers.
Steve Koonin, president of TNT made this announcement:
It’s impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought The Closer to TNT viewers… The Closer was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT’s original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television.
Kyra Sedgwick plays the sweet toothed gal from Atlanta, Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson in the Los Angeles Police Department Major Crimes Division. The other members of the cast includes J.K. Simmons, Jon Tenney, G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Raymond Cruz, Corey Reynolds and Robert Gosset.
The Emmy Award winning star of the show made this comment on the upcoming final season:
I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we’ve created on The Closer…I will always be grateful to James Duff for his love and friendship, as well as for creating such a rich and complex character who I have loved living with year after year. Mike, Greer, Rick and all of our outstanding cast and crew are forever in my heart. I want to thank TNT and Warner Bros. Television, as well as the incredible fans of The Closer, for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years.
In the current season Deputy Chief Johnson unsuccessfully went after Chief Pope’s job with the encouragement of her husband and this lead to some friction. It’s unknown whether she’ll make another play for the top job or get the call to move to another district, either way by announcing a final year the writers can create a conclusion that builds gradually and isn’t the result of some mid-season cancellation.
It’s seventh and final season will air 15 episodes with the show passing it’s 100th episode next year.
