James Franco was recently nominated by the Screen Actors Guild for his portrayal of Aron Ralston in Danny Boyle‘s 127 Hours. It opened this month in other countries and is getting a lot of buzz for it’s intense claustrophobic depiction of Aron Ralston’s story.
Danny Boyle first read about Aron Ralston in the newspaper and later saw the televised press conference on May 8, 2003 a week after his escape. Ralston survived for more than five days trapped by an 800-pound boulder in a narrow canyon, after falling whilst climbing. He would later amputate his arm with a dull blade to escape. His account of the incident is described in his best selling book Between A Rock And A Hard Place upon which the film is based.
When Ralston met Danny Boyle in 2006 to discuss a big-screen adaptation, he was unsure of the director’s concept for an intense first-person ‘immersive vision’, but when Slumdog became a hit, he became open to his ideas.
Now Danny Boyle discusses the challenges of making the film, and how it was accomplished. It’s revealing and also compelling for those interested in the director’s style and his creative approach.
