The acclaimed artist who conceived much of the terrifying world unleashed in 1979’s Alien is re-teaming with Ridley Scott for the upcoming prequel feature.

Carmen Scheifele, the wife of the surrealist sculptor and designer H.R. Giger spoke with German TV and said that her husband was indeed returning to work with Scott on the sets and creatures for the prequel.

space_jockey_sceneGiger who also created ‘The Derelict’ and the ‘Space Jockey‘ seen briefly in the original will be the basis for the origins story. One of the rumored characters is called ‘Engineer 1’ who will be played by an actor using the motion capture format and whose character could be the one featured in the original movie. The story is said to depict the Jockey race overseeing the harvesting of the Xenomorph eggs.

The script was originally penned by John Spaihts and rewritten by Damon Lindelof, however it only covers one story which explains why plans for a double feature have been reigned in. Whilst Ridley has spoken of making Alien prequels, the word is that the focus will now be on making one then if things go well, another could be made with the existing production. At one stage there was rumblings by the studio over budget and the proposed gore so perhaps those issues have contributed to the decision to see how the first movie goes.

No casting decisions have been made on who will be the female lead. Noomi Rapace who’s appearing in the Sherlock Holmes sequel is said to be the favorite with other names in the mix including Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish, Olivia Wilde and Natalie Portman.

The Alien and H.R. Giger

For now it’s a good thing to hear that Giger is returning to the world of Alien which will add to the aesthetic consistency of the Xenomorph universe.

With the prequel set to use 3d technology,  it will be incredible to see the world he helped create brought to life using the new format and current digital effects.

With over 30 years to dream up more nightmarish visions,  fans can look forward to a new realm of terror where once again no-one will hear the screams.
