Gore Verbinski is making his animation debut with the new CG flick Rango starring Johnny Depp and the talented FX wizards of ILM providing the visuals. Now you might think that behind the scenes of such a movie is is just the animators at their computers or the actors reading lines in a sound booth, this new featurette shows something completely different.
Whilst the recording of actors faces has been used for years by animators to better capture expressions, the use of motion capture flicks like Beowulf have not been as successful to enrich performances.
This behind the scenes video shows the partial staging and use of props to give the actors a more fulfilling way to bring their characters to life. The technique was also used by Wes Anderson on The Fantastic Mr Fox and is being used by filmmakers to allow the actors to perform their roles face to face in a template environment that will later be created digitally.
With animated flicks have their own category at the Oscars, the vocal performances are not truly appreciated, perhaps by using this technique more often the animated and physical world will be drawn closer together.
Rango hits cinemas March 4th, 2011.
