With Christopher Nolan still working on the script for The Dark Knight Rises and production set for a May start date, rumors continue to surround the casting and characters of the upcoming  sequel.  News spread early in November that the story might be drawing inspiration from the comic series Prey which features numerous villains for Nolan and screenwriter David S. Goyer to take their pick. When Tom Hardy was announced as being cast,  it was reported that his character might be the villainous Dr. Hugo Strange who becomes obsessed with finding out the caped crusaders identity and eventually poses as him in the hopes of luring Batman into a fiendish trap.

Hardy is playing British operative Ricki Tarr based on the 1974 John Le Carre spy novel which tells the story of  George Smiley (played by Gary Oldman) attempting to uncover a mole within British Intelligence. The film also stars Colin FirthMark Strong, Stephen Graham and Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch.

As for Hardy‘s role in the next Batman, Digital Spy is reporting that according to Batman-on-Film, a source working on The Dark Knight Rises confirms that Hardy won’t be playing the villain. It has not been revealed who Hardy will portray in the film and the actor himself claims to be unsure of his role but an announcement is expected in early 2011.

The Dark Knight Rises is scheduled for release July 20, 2012.
