Tron TV Series – Uprising

Whilst Tron: Legacy wasn’t everything movie goers had hoped for, the world of Tron will be continuing despite a sequel not yet receiving the go ahead. Disney has instead given the greenlight to an animated TV series based on the two existing films that will serve to extend it’s mythology.

The new series will be named Tron: Uprising, and will be shown on the Disney XD network in 2012. Legacy screenwriters Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis are producing and are also working on a ten part micro series to premiere next year as well as overseeing the new series which is set between the events of the first movie and the current flick. The writers have said that Uprising will feature the grid and how it evolved and will take place when Flynn is in a safe house to when Clu takes over the grid and before Sam makes his entrance. Whilst developing Legacy the writers developed mythologies and back stories that didn’t feature in the movie and it’s those aspects that will form the new series and add to the depth of Tron and a possible third movie.

Bruce Boxleitner will be the only cast member lending his vocal talents and reprising his role. Elijah Wood was announced as a rebel leader named Beck along with Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Linda Moore, Nate Corddry and Lance Henriksen.

It was announced in early November that Charlie Bean of Samurai Jack fame will co-write and direct the series with Legacy director Joseph Kosinski on board.

Tron: Legacy has so far grossed almost $90 million in the U.S and $23 million internationally so it’s a safe bet there’s a market for the new series. At this stage no word on the sort of animation that will be used but a hyper stylized CG animation technique similar to the Clone Wars would benefit this kind of series.
