Here’s a fascinating video thanks to The Hollywood Reporter which sits down with some of today’s most accomplished Directors as they speak about problems with the film ratings board, their creative vision and compromise. It’s an hour long video so pull up your favorite chair – though anyone interested in movies especially the creative and ethical side to filmmaking should find this revealing, particularly the views from directors who faced struggles to get their film’s made.
Super cool Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) is there offering his insight as well as David O. Russell who made The Fighter talking candidly about the challenges he faced. Legendary director Peter Weir talks about censorship, the studio system and gives us clues about his directorial style and Lisa Cholodenko reveals why she had to trim scenes from The Kids Are All Right. Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) discusses his documentary background and Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) touches upon censorship and his personal reasons for making his highly regarded film.
They all got together November 13, 2010 for an hour long sit down at Smashbox Studios in West Hollywood. It was all part of The Hollywood Reporter’s annual series ’round table’ discussing director’s visions and issues with the ratings systems, but quickly reveals how they make great films and why they are Top Directors.
