The Troll Hunter is the latest in the wave of movies that are designed as ‘mockumentaries’ and borrow from the ‘found footage’ genre which was used to great effect in ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Cloverfield’. Most recently ‘The Last Exorcism’ used the genre style and now Norwegian filmmaker André Øvredal is taking audiences on a similar ride with Trolljegeren aka Troll Hunter.
The film opened in Norway in October and has been picked up for international distribution by Magnet Releasing, a division of Magnolia Pictures. Its set to make a splash when it premieres at the January Sundance Film Festival which takes place between the 20th and the 30th. The film looks very clever and if you haven’t seen the trailer then check it out. Going into these types of movie the scary part is knowing that as the footage is supposedly ‘recovered’, you know most of the players won’t make it to the end.
Troll Hunter sees the students investigating a series of mysterious bear killings only to learn that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter who is tasked with protecting Norway from giant trolls. The students are under the impression that the power lines running across the hillsides of Norway are actually high-powered electric fences used to keep the monsters away from the general public and they are determined to blow the lid off the whole operation.
The film Stars Otto Jesperen as the trolljegeren, Hans Morten Hansen, Tomas Alf Larsen, Johanna Mørck and Robert Stoltenberg.

If you’re curious how the imagery is achieved without spoiling too much check out these FX featurettes. Produced by Storm Studios and Gimpville, the 3D animation and compositing is achieved using Houdini to create elements such as the environment, the various trolls their fur and more. Fascinating inside reveal which shows just how much effort went into making the movie – definitely one to see if your heading to Sundance.
