Ghostbusters was a massive box office success back in 1984 and is still loved by fans today for its mix of comedic performances and inventive special effects. Whilst the second outing wasn’t as well received, it began a franchise that’s been waiting for another sequel which after more than 2 decades is looking like its just around the corner.
This week Cinema Blend got to speak with director Ivan Reitman who was able to give an exclusive update about the movie and was quick to dismiss the internet gossip surrounding the third installment.
Virtually everything you’ve read on the internet [about Ghostbusters III] is not accurate.
As far as the behind-the-scenes issues go with Bill Murray being vocal about his increasing lack of enthusiasm for the project and the script:
We have a really good script, but Bill has to read it. He hasn’t read it. There has been all kinds of chatter online about him reading it and not liking it. He has not read a thing. He’s never read anything. And I just sent it to him. So we’ll see. God knows how long that will take. But we’ll see.
Murray who appeared in 2009’s ‘Zombieland’ which saw him acting out a scene from ‘Ghostbusters’, recently showed up at the 2010 Scream Awards in his Venkman costume, so odds are that he’s up for the movie reunion.
When asked about the project being on schedule to begin in May, Reitman said that they still need to fill certain roles though they ‘have some actors who seem to be interested in doing it, a ton of interest in the film’.
The director also confirmed Dan Aykroyd’s claims about the cast:
All the original characters have parts, as well as a whole bunch of new characters. It’s got a really good story, this one, maybe the best of the whole series. I hope we get to do it.
Sony Pictures has hinted that production could begin by this spring, with a release set for late 2012. With this scoop straight from the director it sounds like the production is moving froward and it shouldn’t be too long before the sliming begins.
