Here’s the new trailer for Red Riding Hood from the original ‘Twilight’ director Catherine Hardwicke offering a modern updating of the classic fairytale. The new trailer features the electronica chords of composer Trent Reznor and the production design looks rich as does the sweeping cinematography that complements the always stunning Amanda Seyfried.
Wearing the trademark flowing scarlet cloak, Valerie is a member of a small Medieval village that’s being terrorized by a werewolf. Gary Oldman looks quite distinct in his purple robes as Father Solomon, an expert on hunting down these kind of monsters. Paranoia spreads like wildfire as the citizens learn the wolf may be one of them by day, possibly the outsider Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) who’s also Valerie’s clandestine lover.
The promo offers some cool imagery of blood red moons and natural landscapes that fits into the genre though the tone seems to play to a more surreal, possibly camp interpretation rather than an all out goth horror. It sure has a lot of style and underlying themes with a possibility that even Red’s grandmother (Oscar-winner Julie Christie) could be the monster herself.
We’ll have to find out and see if all is as it seems in this modern retelling when Red Riding Hood hits U.S. cinemas March 11th, 2011.
