For some time we’ve known that Ron Howard has been working on the adaptation of Stephen King‘s ‘Dark Tower’ which is a 7-novel series and takes place in a mythic version of the Old West. The scope of the film is on the scale of Jackson’s ‘Rings’ films with 3 films planned as well as an accompanying TV series. Last week at the Golden Globes Brian Grazer said that he and director Ron Howard were to close to making their decision as to who they wanted to play the lead in the ambitious adaptation, now it seems that they’ve found their cowboy.
Javier Bardem has officially been offered the lead role of gunslinger Roland Deschain which if he signs on, will appear in all three films and the first season of the accompanying TV series. Howard will be directing the initial film and the TV series that bridges the gap between the first and second film. Another TV series would follow which is a prequel story and would feature another actor playing Deschain as a young man. The proposed third and final film would see the original cast return for the conclusion to mammoth story.
The book series is being adapted by screenwriter Akiva Goldsman who’s described the story as “an alternate Americana, one part post-apocalyptic, one part Sergio Leone.” Stephen King is likely to offer to new ideas along the way as an eighth installment of the series was announced and would likely be ready as the films draw to a conclusion.
Bardem who recently earned a second Oscar nomination for ‘Biutiful’ is obviously a great choice to play the dual-wielding, quick-drawing gunslinger who’s on a quest of mythic-western proportions and it will be interesting to see how the vivid world of King’s novels and the Marvel graphic comics are brought to life.
At this point the casting hasn’t officially been announced but a date has been set and production would need to move forward soon.
The first film of the The Dark Tower series is currently scheduled for release May 17, 2013.

While I’m sure he is a great actor, due to his nominations and all, I just don’t see him as Roland. Roland should be played by a more rugged all american type. Sorry, this is just my opinion.
Yes, he doesn’t seem suited to a wild west style character, but actors create many personas – would love to see him as a bond villain – maybe he’ll get to do both.

While in Vancouver, Kalhor will abide by the strict dress code set forth by the Islamic Republic. In the Olympic village she will wear the traditional headscarf, but on the slopes, she’ll dress like Kids’ Carey Price Jersey all the other skiers. According to Kalhor, “Skiing is a sport which needs you to be fully clothed. So as far as the uniform for the competition goes, there is no problem I’ll observe the Islamic dress code.”
New Orleans: Backup Mark Brunell is a free agent and I鈥檓 not sure the Saints want to bring him back because of his age. Delhomme is no Drew Brees, but also is no Aaron Brooks.
