Javier Bardem has been offered another substantial film role that could see the actor facing something of a quandary. The man who turned in one of the most chilling performances in years in the Coen Brothers ‘No Country For Old Men’, could be bringing his villainous charms to the next Bond movie. The role hasn’t been specified but traditionally the biggest male role opposite 007 is the villain. EON Productions is said to have made Bardem the offer to join Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and director Sam Mendes around the same time as his Oscar nod for ‘Biutiful’.
However the dilemma facing the actor is that he was also offered the role of the Gunslinger Roland Deschain in Ron Howard‘s proposed trilogy based on Stephen King‘s novel series, ‘The Dark Tower’.
As yet an announcement has not been made as to which of the projects he’s up for. Ron Howard’s would be creatively rewarding but it would also be a significant commitment with a TV series planned to follow the first film, and another two films and series intended to wrap the story.
However a role in the next Bond film is something of a lifetime opportunity and with the series being it’s best in years, not to mention working with Daniel Craig and the Oscar winning director, it could make things more enticing. From a screenplay written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan, the story is said to pick up after the events of ‘Quantum of Solace’, production will begin in the latter half of 2011.
Bardem and wife Penelope Cruz recently welcomed a new child into the world and it’s thought the proud father wouldn’t want to be away from home as much at this point. The Howard project is thought to be a multi-year commitment and could affect the actor’s decision to take on other roles.
If Javier Bardem does choose Bond, it will certainly take the film to a whole new level and give the franchise an extremely memorable bad guy.
