Joaquin Phoenix is considering taking on a role that would signal his return to mainstream acting. After his mock doc ‘I’m Still Here’ which largely confused the heck out of people, this could re-establish his skills as a performer and bring his usual flair to a movie that could be dark and deliciously fun.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is being directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) from a screenplay adapted by the author Seth Grahame-Smith with Tim Burton producing. Last week Benjamin Walker scored the coveted role of the 16th American President, and now the other parts are up for grabs.
The story is fashioned around Abe’s secret diaries which documents him learning about the existence of vampires and begins hunting them down when he finds out his mother’s death was caused by them.
During a fight with one, a young Lincoln almost dies but is saved by the vampire Henry Sturges. He befriends the young hunter and teaches him about the species, how they are not all evil, and how to combat them with a trusty axe.
The role Phoenix is eying is that of the vampire and mentor, Henry Sturges which was previously offered to current sensation Tom Hardy, who’ll be busy working on the next Batman flick.
Phoenix is seeking a return to acting and this could be the type of role he could relish, he’s said to be very interested having met with the studio and the gos is, ‘it’s his if he wants it’.
From the likes of ‘Gladiator’, to his musical portrayal of Johnny Cash in ‘Walk the Line’, Phoenix is a considerable talent and his ability to turn in fascinating performances would benefit this genre movie.
That said Phoenix is said to be ‘cagey and could decide not to go forward’, so we’ll know more when the deal is done and when other casting announcements are made.
