Fans of Smallville can rejoice in knowing that when the 2 hour finale arrives on May 13, it will have a fitting conclusion with the return of one the show’s favorite characters. A deal has recently been made that will see Michael Rosenbaum return to the CW series, reprising his role as Lex Luthor.
While the last two seasons have used creative storytelling to fill the void of his absence, the loose story ends can now be tied up to make way for the return of the quintessential villain.
Rosenbaum left Smallville in 2008 to focus on his writing and other projects, not to mention having to constantly shave his head for the part. Rumors of his return reached fever pitch this week when his name appeared on the imdb database for episode twenty. This led to plenty of speculation but it wasn’t til Friday February 11, that the deal was signed to make his return. Filming of the series finale will begin soon with production on Smallville set to wrap by the end of next month.
It’s not known how big a payday he’ll be getting, but the finale could draw ridiculously huge numbers and the advertising alone would be worth megabucks, lets just hope the writers make use of every moment of his availability.
Smallville executive producers / showrunners Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson had this to say:
It feels like the stars are aligning, literally. We couldn’t be more excited about having Michael back.
And as far as the way he returns … there’ll be no doubt about how Lex becomes the great rival in Clark Kent’s life. He is the villain of the story.
Rosenbaum said that he’s “delighted” to return for the series finale:
I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is, I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness and even their threats. Ha ha. I can’t wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again….. Oh, and for Lex to become the badass he’s destined to be.
Michael Rosenbaum has been sorely missed since his departure, and his return will not only make for a memorable finale but will also be something of a TV milestone.
