Apollo 18 – ‘found footage’ Trailer

apollo18poster Here’s the first trailer for Apollo 18 that falls into the “found footage” sub-genre where the film plays as all to real for the purposes of creating  an authentic story. While it’s an inventive genre, the found footage format predicates that there are usually little or no survivors – hence the  reason why the footage is claimed to be recovered. In this press release the Weinstein Company says the footage was actually discovered by producer Bekmambetov in the Russian film archives:

A quintessential Cold War story, Apollo 18 casts light on the covert and undocumented lunar mission that officially  “never happened.” Bekmambetov, hired by Russia to shoot a documentary about the Russian space station, recently  came across footage in its space archives that bolsters the idea that an Apollo 18 mission did, in fact, take place, and  reveals startling evidence of extraterrestrial life forms. This actual footage will be part of Apollo 18, a paranormal thriller  that will interpolate fact and fiction.

The trailer is very cool and offers a unique angle on the moon landing with the various film and video formats that would’ve been available at  the time,  inter-cut to great effect. This looks like it has a bit more of an edge over the ‘Paranormal Activity’ flicks where instead of just waiting  for a ghostly image to pop into frame, the filmmakers have gone to great lengths to create the moon surface, the lunar module and the detailed spacesuits which add to the authenticity, and overall looks very impressive.

The flick is directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego from a screenplay by Brian Miller and produced by Timur Bekmambetov.

Apollo 18 opens April 22nd 2011.
