Gary Oldman is on the promotional trail talking about his role in the upcoming flick Red Riding Hood starring hottie Amanda Seyfried, but when the interviewers get to him, the questions frequently turn to The Dark Knight Rises which starts filming in May.
The actor recently completed work on Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy playing the semi-retired agent George Smiley, which he says is one of his best roles yet and the film experienced something of a bidding war for distribution rights with Universal nabbing the flick. The Cold War thriller also stars Tom Hardy who was one of the first announced to be playing the villainous Bane in the next chapter of Batman. This pairing of the two Batman stars is something of comic relief in this interview and Gary Oldman jokes about this as well as offering some clues about the next installment. Anne Hathaway is set to play Catwoman, though not necessarily as a villain, her character of Selina Kyle might be assisting Bruce Wayne and possibly be his love interest.
In the interview, Gary Oldman confirms how the story will be bringing the saga full circle, which may refer to the back-story of Batman’s mentor Ra’s Al Ghul. Though it’s unknown if Liam Neeson will be reprising his role in some way, the story is rumored to follow his daughter Talia Al’Ghul who’s set to be played by Inception star Marion Cotillard. Her character supposedly heads ‘The League of Shadows’ with Bane as her muscle and possible love interest. Recently cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt is said to be playing the character Roman Sionis / Black Mask, who has his own twisted path similar to that of the Joker’s plight. The comics depict his character as coming from the same wealthy background that Bruce Wayne did, though after years of rejection from his parents whom he later kills, he ruins the family’s cosmetic business and carves his ebony mask from his father’s coffin. Actor Lucas Haas is also rumored to have joined the cast as Alberto Falcone, the son of former mob boss Carmine Falcone, played by Tom Wilkinson in ‘Batman Begins’.
While most of these rumors come from sources such as production staff and casting agents, the film is certainly coming together and the script will be something of a closely guarded secret. The stars of ‘Inception’ were required to read the script at the production offices so similar safeguards will likely be in play to preserve the integrity of Christopher Nolan’s story, and knowing too much would be spoiling what will surely be a fantastic cinema experience.
Update: Variety is reporting that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will most likely play Alberto Falcone, also known as the villain the Holiday Killer, and Juno Temple (Cracks) is set to appear as a street-smart Gotham girl. EW has also reported that while Gordon-Levitt has indeed joined the cast, he will not be playing the son of Falcone, let the re-speculations begin!
Thanks to MTV, check out the interview with Gary Oldman who is careful not to say too much, though his excitement is palpable:
