Fans of Marvel comics and superhero themed flicks can rejoice, coz the first trailer has been released for Captain America: The First Avenger.
The story focuses on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.
Setting a superhero flick back in the 1930’s seemed something of a gamble without today’s hi-tech gadgetry, though the trailer shows that it has an interesting edge with events taking place in the midst of Hitlers’ War, with a bad ass villain played by Hugo Weaving and the good guy purpose built by the scientific division of the military to tackle the forces of evil.
The new promo offers plenty of action and attention to detail, recreating the time period as well as making star Chris Evans look all puny before his upgrade. The actor was at first a bit reluctant to take on the role which required him to commit to subsequent sequels, though he quickly warmed to the director’s take on the concept and the plans Marvel had for bringing this character to life. Director Joe Johnston has praised the production for creating a great collaborative environment and enabling him to make a film that he’s very proud of.
The director had this to say about the film when he spoke to HeatVision back in January:
Maybe I’m somewhat biased — I was there [when we made it] — but, seriously, it’s funny, it’s exciting and there’s great visual effects. The movie is going to be something more than people are expecting. This movie is going to surprise some people. It is the origin story of Captain America but it is also something rare — it’s a period superhero film but there’s great action in it. You don’t normally think of guys driving around in 1939 sedans in an action film but there are some great action beats in it. It’s just a helluva lot of fun to watch.
Synopsis:
Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by “vita-rays.” Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.
The flick stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving.
Captain America: The First Avenger opens in 3D on July 22, 2011.
