Okay Users, word is out that Disney has begun developing a sequel to Tron: Legacy with director Joseph Kosinski working with original writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz on a follow up story. The flick helped launched a new animated TV show that’s set to launch on Disney XD later this year and despite mixed reviews the film grossed $399 million globally which also makes Kosinski the highest-grossing first-time director of a live-action film, edging past JJ Abrams for Mission: Impossible 3.
While it’s still early days, Kosinski will likely return though it’s not confirmed as he’s being shopping around his post-apocalyptic flick Oblivion, which may see him tied up if it gets picked up by Universal.
Legacy’s greatest asset was the director’s unique design vision and he crafted a visually impressive piece, though somewhat clunky in places it required additional scenes to help bookend the story. Nonetheless an astounding debut that has helped begin a new franchise that Disney knows when it sees one, it also had a successful soundtrack selling 615,000 copies worldwide, and spawned an attraction at Disney’s California Adventure theme park and a roller-coaster ride is under consideration at the Shanghai theme park.
Hopefully the filmmakers start out with a stronger script that ties up the narrative loose ends and the avatar technology is ramped up on anymore Jeff Bridges CGI counterparts.
