In the lead up to the release of Thor, Aussie star Chris Hemsworth became the frontrunner to play the huntsman character in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White. Now with Thor raking in almost $300 million worldwide in just two weeks, Hemsworth has officially been signed for the role. Charlize Theron who’s currently working on Ridley Scott‘s Alien themed ‘Prometheus’ will play the evil queen, and Sam Claflin will play the prince. Rupert Sanders will direct from a script by Evan Daugherty.
Though the biggest problem seen by Universal was that Relativity Media had a similarly themed flick called The Brothers Grimm: Snow White which begins shooting this August and opens June 29, 2012. Universal’s Snow White was set to open December 21st 2012 and the biggest problem with flicks that have the same theme is that movie-goers generally ignore the second movie if it sounds like a knock-off, so Universal has acted swiftly and swapped the release dates with Judd Apatow‘s next untitled film.
Snow White and the Huntsman is now scheduled for release June 1, 2012. Chris Hemsworth will be reprising his Thor character in Josh Whedon’s The Avengers which is currently filming.
