The first trailer has been released for the The Adventures of Tintin which uses similar Avatar technology to bring the world Hergé to life. Directors Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson have teamed up to ensure the beloved characters are vividly depicted using the cutting edge 3D performance-capture and animation.
All up the trailer looks very impressive, and while those in the U.S are less familiar with Tintin than Europe or Australia, the film looks set to be an incredible visual experience coupled with an old fashioned mystery that was a hallmark of the classic series.
Originally the film went by the longer title, The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, though it likely combines elements of the two books ‘The Secret of the Unicorn’ and ‘Red Rackham’s Treasure’. The script was co-written by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish and ‘Doctor Who’ showrunner Steven Moffat, so expect a good mix of period adventure, and a well crafted plot.
The film-makers have captured the world of Hergé with great attention to detail. Snowy the loyal terrier is there, the Thompson twins with their comic relief and then there was the impulsive and loyal friend to Tintin, Captain Haddock who also had a weakness for whiskey.
The crucial ingredient that’s very apparent in the trailer is the work of Weta Digital and we can see that under the supervision of Peter Jackson, the stunning renditions are exemplary of impressive character and motion capture animation. While the trailer moves along at a cracking pace and Tintin is kept mostly in the shadows, a close-up at the end reveals his expression and more importantly his eyes. A failing of motion capture animation especially the works of Robert Zemeckis and Imagemovers was the lifeless expressions seen in the most recent flick ‘Mars Needs Moms’ which bombed at the box office for mostly this reason. The quality of the animation featured in Tintin captures the adventures of the intrepid Belgian reporter and could be the beginning of a fantastic franchise.
The Adventures of Tintin stars Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Daniel Craig and opens in the U.K October 26th 2011 and December 23rd in the U.S.
