The new season of Dexter began shooting May 25th in Los Angeles, and now we have another teaser trailer with Michael C. Hall doing his inner monologue with blood filled eyes to give you a taste of what to expect. While the fifth season garnered it’s highest ratings to date and earned another season, some fans have thought the show may have lost some of it’s edge.
Chip Johannessen took over the reigns as showrunner from Clydye Philips at the end of season 4. He was left with the significant challenge of dealing with the fallout after John Lithgow‘s Trinity Killer leveled the playing field considerably. In the first episode of season 5 written by Johannessen, there was a discernible shift in tone with unnecessary flashbacks of Dexter’s first meeting with Rita, which served mainly to offer some form of closure for fans.
However Dexter was a much darker show in earlier seasons, and there was always a greater threat of his exposure as the vigilante serial killer. Dexter has since become a different beast altogether, a more commercial rendition of the character created by author Jeff Lindsay, and deviating entirely from the series of books (for a multitude of reasons).
Scott Buck who has worked on the show as co-executive producer since 2007, is taking over the reigns for what promises to be a return to form for season 6. What’s known at present is the casting details which hint at who the bad guys and other players might be. However this season may have more than one bad guy to keep viewers guessing.
Showtime president David Nevins recently had this say about the coming season.
It is not one big bad… There’s one interesting story that will move through the season, and it will be cast very interestingly, but it’s not exactly that one person.
Colin Hanks who’s made a name for himself with various projects over the years has landed the part of Travis Marshall and will be in all 12 episodes this season. He’ll be playing a brilliant expert on ancient artifacts who becomes linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami. Molly Parker recently landed the role of Lisa Marshall playing sister to Hanks.
Edward James Olmos of Battlestar Galactica fame, will be featured in an extended arc, playing a brilliant and charismatic professor of religious studies.
CS Lee who plays Masuka hinted at the recent ‘2nd Annual SAG Foundation Golf Classic’ that Edward James Olmos’ character might turn out to be one of this season’s baddies, if not the baddie.
It seems to be that way… The guy is such a wonderful actor and such a presence that you would probably shoot yourself in the foot if you didn’t do that. He’s going to be great.
As for Masuka’s story this season:
I have a few ‘lab helpers’ coming in this year. They’re either going to help me or they’re going to get me in trouble. We’ll see what happens.
We’ve seen the last of Sonya, the Irish au pair who looked after Dex’s son Harrison with Aimee Garcia joining the cast as Jamie, the new nanny. Jamie’s character is described as an outgoing and fun Latina in her mid-20s, who relocates to Miami for grad school and is also the kid sister of Batista, which should makes things interesting. Another new character will be Chicago Mike, a thirtysomething African-American homicide detective from the Windy City who ‘possesses a finely turned BS detector’ and does not play well with others – and possibly Dex.
Rapper and funny man Mos Def will be playing a hardened ex-con who claims to have found religion yet finds himself in the middle of Miami’s violent criminal underworld.
With Colin Hanks the likely main nemesis this coming season, it remains unclear whether he will be a friend or foe to a certain Dark Passenger, either way it should all end in a bloodbath Dexter style that should leave fans satisfied.
Dexter season 6 will debut on Showtime, September 2011.
