Though critically well received and a favourite with viewers, Starz has opted not to renew the period drama Camelot for a second season. It premièred in April as one of Starz’s highest-rated series début with 1.13 million viewers, later episodes saw a bit of a slump, however the show picked up towards the finale garnering similar numbers.
The issue would seem not to be with the ratings or the quality of the show, Starz are saying it’s due to scheduling conflicts of the cast which has forced their hand. The Ireland-shot costume drama starred Joseph Feinnes, Jamie Campbell Bower and the lovely Eva Green, and offered an innovative and realistic depiction of the classic Arthurian legend, fused with witchcraft and sorcery.
Camelot had it’s critcis with some seeing it as a poor substitute for the Starz favourite Spartacus, which after the health crisis of star Andy Whitfield brought production on the second season to a halt. Camelot also had HBO‘s Game of Thrones to go up against which aired around the same time and stole most of the shows thunder, with each episode attracting greater interest and more acclaim.
That said Camelot was a costly production, with sets and costumes and lavish location work, the rumoured price tag was around a million dollars per episode to produce. No word on whether GK-tv/ Octagon Films are shopping the period drama to other networks.
