In a shock move, Glee creator Ryan Murphy has stated that he’s cutting three of the show’s biggest stars, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer at the end of season 3.
Branded as somewhat of a megalomaniac in the making, Murphy intends to have their characters graduate to maintain realism.
You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.
Though it’s still early days, and the network might still have the final word, it’s got plenty of folks pretty upset over the move, lets face it – the show is hardly a realistic depiction of life at a high school and most of the characters are pretty far removed from reality, such as Jane Lynch’s Coach character who would’ve been fired, or worst locked up by now.
Murphy added that ‘more characters are leaving than are staying‘ and says that the cast has welcomed the change:
We made that decision and I involved Chris and Lea and they thought that was a good idea. They both trust the writing and trust me and felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top.
Strangely Lea Michele is the shows biggest and most recognizable star, and with these talented performers the scripts wouldn’t be coming to life. Perhaps behind the scenes there’s something going on, or the producers are worried that sky rocketing paychecks will push up licensing fees and make the show more expensive to produce. That said there’s plenty of talent out there and no one person is bigger than the show, Charlie Sheen learnt the hard way.
While it’s bad news for fans, these have been career making roles for the actors, and being tied down to characters for years can been limiting and in the entertainment business, potentially stereotyping. Michele was on Broadway before joining Glee and stars in the upcoming flick ‘New Year’s Day’. As for Monteith his disarming personality landed him a role in the teen flick ‘Monte Carlo’, and Golden Globe-winner Colfer wrote a feature called ‘Struck By Lightning’ that Brian Dannelly will direct. It’s fair to say that this house cleaning will also see fellow castmember Dianna Agron get the boot.
With all these behind the scenes antics, fans of Glee will soon have little to sing about.
