THE THING – First Trailer

Here’s the first trailer for The Thing that serves as a direct prequel story to John Carpenter‘s 1982 gore fest that was also a remake of the 1951 classic ‘The Thing from Another World’, an adaptation of the 1938 novella “Who Goes There?”. While a prequel can spoil the surprises of the original – this serves as an untold chapter within the same timeline which could be fun. It will be interesting to see the references to the 80’s culture, and hopefully what made Carpenter’s movie a cult favorite will be the addition of today’s visual FX that might outdo the gut wrenching horror that was said to have made some audience members flee the theaters in it’s day. The original horror FX were created by Rob Bottin and this time round award winning FX company Amalgamated Dynamics are providing the physical FX. Originally the film was set to debut in April, though required additional photography and some enhanced visuals via CGI to bring the film up to scratch – which the filmmakers assure fans this prequel will do.

The film is from Dutch commercial director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as paleontologist Kate Lloyd, who works with the Norwegian scientific team that stumbles upon the ancient extraterrestrial ship in Antarctica, they make the mistake of taking a chunk of ice with a frozen life-form inside and when it thaws out – that’s when the fun begins. The flick also stars Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

For the most part the story looks like a rehash with similar twists and turns, and it’s inevitable lead up to the existing story could detract from the suspense – however it’s flashback concept may prove interesting for fans who want to see how it stacks up against the original. For newcomers it should provide some cool scares and hopefully some more stomach turning horror.

The Thing opens October 14th, 2011.
