The first trailers for season 6 of Showtime‘s signature show Dexter have gone online and offer a glimpse of what looks to be a very dark season for our boy Dex. While recent seasons has seen the fear element subside considerably with Dexter’s newly found family values, this season promises a return to form. With the line blurred between serial killer and heroic vigilante many a time, the promos reveal that Dex might be on the path to some kind of spiritual enlightenment, and begin justifying the actions of his dark passenger on behalf of the man upstairs.
This season’s guest stars include Edward James Olmos who plays Professor Geller, a religious scholar who shares a strange connection with Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks), and from the looks of it they seem to be in cahoots for this season’s ‘big bad’. Mos Def plays an ex-con on a mission to set others on the path of righteousness, which may include Dex, at least for now.
Michael C.Hall says that Dexter will strive to become a better influence for his son Harrison, which may explain his interest in divinity:
Dexter feels ill-equipped to provide [guidance], and as a result, is motivated to find ways to do that, including maybe giving him some sort of spiritual grounding, something Dexter has never really cared about, but recognizes his son might need.
This season Scott Buck takes over as series Showrunner and at the recent Comic -Con Showtime Panel, he and executive producer Sarah Colleton commented on how the show has diverged from the macabre books, saying that after the first book they stopped reading and that all forthcoming seasons have had nothing to do with the novels.
Last season Quinn (Desmond Harrington) came close to uncovering the truth after enlisting the help of Robocop’s Peter Weller, and his sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) was mere feet away from finding out, could this be the game changing season? Scott Buck says the odds are not in Deb’s favor. “Deb is very smart, but Dexter is smarter.”
Dexter returns October 2, 2011.
