USA‘s dazzling new show Suits, has earned a second season after pulling in consistently stellar ratings. The pilot episode was USA’s 3rd-best performer ever scoring a total of 6.3 million viewers, and the subsequent episodes have only dipped slightly.
The show follows a brilliant and misdirected genius who through a turn of fate becomes the protégé to a super cool lawyer – it’s been getting a lot of buzz with it’s extremely likeable characters and a style that follows in the footsteps of buddy dramas like ‘White Collar’, with an edge that attracts the ever popular 18-49 demographic with a few life lessons at the core. Starring Gabriel Macht as Harvey, the hotshot New York attorney, and Patrick J. Adams as Mike, the brilliant college-dropout, the show has been pushing the narrative boundaries.
USA Co-president Jeff Wachtel had this to say on it’s style and substance:
With Suits, we’ve gone to a new level of storytelling and visual sophistication and to a little bit of an edgier place – Harvey is not immediately likable and the young hero has made so many bad choices in his life, when we meet him he is dealing drugs. For a network that has made its mark with aspirational characters and smart escapism, this is a step in a new direction.
Suits is from ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ writer Aaron Korsh with Doug Liman serving as executive producer. The first season finishes shooting in Toronto this week and news of the show’s renewal will certainly be a morale booster for cast and crew.
The season finale airs September 8th and will return next summer for a 16-episode second-season.
Suits currently airs on USA Thursdays and debuts on the Seven network in Australia, Monday Aug 15th, 2011.
